Understanding dynamic risk assessment is essential because risks can change quickly and cannot always be anticipated within a written risk assessment or care plan. Staff must be able to recognise emerging hazards, assess the level of risk, and make safe and proportionate decisions while continuing to respect the individual’s choices, dignity and independence. Effective dynamic risk assessment helps prevent avoidable harm, supports positive risk-taking and ensures staff know when it is appropriate to continue, adapt, stop or escalate an activity.
